FAQ

Answers to the questions we get

Straight answers to the questions clients ask us most.
How do you actually use AI in legal work?

We use modern language models and structured legal workflows to accelerate research, diligence, drafting, and document review. Strategy, judgment, and counsel remain human. Every deliverable is reviewed by an attorney admitted in the relevant jurisdiction before it leaves the firm.

Is my data used to train AI models?

No. We do not permit client information to be used to train foundation models. Client data is stored and processed within tenants we control, with strict data-handling terms and data-residency options in the United States and the European Union.

What jurisdictions can you practice in?

Our attorneys are admitted in New York, California, Texas, the District of Columbia, England and Wales, and selected EU jurisdictions. For matters requiring local admission elsewhere, we work with trusted local counsel.

How is BauHaus different from a traditional law firm?

We staff every matter with a senior attorney admitted in the relevant jurisdiction — no leveraged associate pyramids. We apply AI to tasks software does reliably well (research, diligence, redlining, document review) and keep human judgment on everything that matters. And we quote pricing clients can plan around.

Can I start with a small matter to see how you work?

Yes. We accept smaller scoped engagements — a single NDA review, a formation, a one-off sanctions-clearance memo — precisely so you can evaluate us before a larger matter.

Do you work with in-house legal teams?

Yes. Many of our clients have in-house counsel. We act as specialist external counsel on matters that need deep expertise, additional capacity, or jurisdictional coverage an in-house team does not maintain internally.

How does your pricing work?

We offer fixed fees for well-scoped matters, capped fees where the work is largely scoped but some variability is real, and hourly billing for complex litigation and prolonged negotiations. We recommend the structure that fits the matter and confirm it in writing before we start.

Do you bill for AI usage or internal time?

No. We do not mark up AI usage. We do not bill for internal conferencing, administrative overhead, or training time. Disbursements are billed at cost.

What happens if a matter exceeds the scoped fee?

On capped-fee matters, we stay under the cap. On fixed-fee matters, we absorb variance within scope. On hourly matters, we provide weekly accruals and written early-warnings before any material threshold.

Do you offer retainers?

Yes. We offer monthly retainers for clients with recurring needs, with unused hours carrying forward within the engagement term. Retainers are priced and scoped in writing.

How quickly do you respond to inbound matters?

Every inbound matter receives a response from an admitted attorney within 24 hours, including weekends for urgent maritime and litigation matters. No intake specialist. No gatekeeper.
